You searched and searched for ALL the Persian kittens for sale on the internet when you finally came across that special kitty that claims a little piece of your heart. And now the day has finally arrived: your sweet and cuddly Persian kitten is on its way home! Are you ready for all the responsibilities that comes with owning a Persian kitten? On this page you will find a list of supplies you need to take care of your furry love bundle. You’ll also find helpful information every new kitten owner needs to know.
Bringing your new kitty home
When you first bring your kitty home, you should place him in a small area until he is comfortable with his new environment. It can be your bedroom, bathroom or any other place that can be his for a few days. Show him where the litter box is immediately so he won’t have any accidents on the floor! During this transition period, make sure you spend a lot of time with your new kitten giving him lots of love and attention. This will show him that this is a good place to stay and help calm any fears he may have.
Most breeders offer a 3-5 business day period for your kitten to be examined by a veterinarian. If you don’t get the exam, your health guarantee may be void, so be sure to schedule a check up in advance. For the safety of any other pets you may have, you should keep your kitten in quarantine until it has been vet checked and certified healthy.
Introducing your kitten to other pets
When you first introduce your kitty to your other pets, there will most likely be a little hissing and insults going on! But don’t despair; it won’t be long before they get along like 2 peas in a pod – or 3 or 4 peas depending on how many furry friends you have! Kittens are such fun creatures, but as long as they aren’t mistreated, they will get along well with any animal. Just make sure you never leave your kitten alone with another pet until you are sure they get along well.
Ideally, you should introduce your kitten one pet at a time. Make sure that during the time your kitten is adjusting to her new home that you give your other pets A LOT of extra love and attention. It’s easy to get carried away with the excitement of a new pet, so you need to make sure you put a special one aside once with your other pets so they know they’re still important to you too!
Grooming your Persian kitten
Persians and Himalayans have long, beautiful hair that requires extra care and attention. You should groom your kitten or cat at least every other day, preferably more, to prevent tangles and tangles. If your kitten develops a dull don’t worry! Just make sure you take care of it immediately before it gets worse. Bricks and tangles can cause your kitty pain when he walks because his hair is pulled in all directions! Ouch!
To remove a matte, gently loosen it with your fingers and try brushing it off. If that doesn’t work, you may need to cut it in the center with scissors. Be very careful not to cut the kitten’s skin! After you cut it, try loosening it again and then brush it carefully. Remember to pay special attention to the hair along the underside of your kitten. This likes to get tangled quite frequently. On small kittens I sometimes cut the hair on their butt just to keep them clean until they get big enough to do a good enough job on their own. Don’t forget to use the comb to remove any loose hair from their undercoat!
Litter Box Tips
Kittens usually get fully litter trained by 5 weeks of age, but when they first arrive at their new home, they may not know the proper place to shed. To reduce any confusion, follow the tips below:
o As soon as you bring your kitten home, put it in the litter box. This way they will know where it is and after such a long journey they will definitely need to use it!
o For very small kittens, make sure the litter box is always close by. If they start having an accident, take them and put them in the litter box.
o Use the same litter box they are used to when you first bring them home. You can change it later if needed.
o Always make sure you keep the litter box VERY clean! Your kitty will not use a litter box that is too dirty. Instead, he will use the floor, the bathtub, the sofa etc.
o Make sure the litter box is not too close to the kitten’s food or water. Cats don’t like to eliminate near where they eat!
o Make sure you have at least one cat litter box per level of your home. For small kittens you may want to have two or three litter boxes available until you are sure they have learned their habits.
o NEVER hit a kitten for having an accident. You will only teach them that relieving yourself is a bad thing that can cause a lot of problems if your kitten becomes constipated. If your kitten has accidents, you may need to make more litter boxes accessible to them. When they are small, they may not want to walk through the entire house to get to the litter box and may find it more comfortable to go where they are. So, if you have a lot of litter boxes in your home, you will reduce the chances of accidents.
Feeding your kitten
Kittens should have access to their food and water 24 hours a day. They are growing so fast that they need as much nutrition as possible! You should never give your kitten adult cat food. It doesn’t have all the nutrients a growing kitten needs. Always give him kitten food.
I advise you not to change your kitten’s food until you have eaten them for at least 2 weeks. It’s stressful enough to come to a new place, there’s no reason to give them stomach pain and possibly diarrhea on top of everything else.
If you change their food, you should do it slowly over a period of at least a week. Mix some of the new food with the old and slowly increase the amount until you reach 100% of the new food.
Never feed a kitten or cat only a wet food diet. This will cause tartar to build up on the teeth and cause many problems in the future, including tooth loss. The chewing and biting action of dry food cleans the teeth. Wet food should only be given as treats. If you have to feed your kitten as a meal, be sure to include at least one meal a day of dry food. You may also want to consider getting a toothbrush for your kitty to make sure their teeth stay clean!
Supplies needed for kittens
Garbage can- This is one of the most important things! If you wish, you can purchase one of the smaller litter boxes to start your kitten with. As they grow, you can move on to a bigger one. Litters are great if you don’t have a lot of time to harvest. They do the work for you! Just empty the drip tray when full and insert a new one. A good rule of thumb is to have a cat litter box that you own.
Clumping litter – Tidy Cats Scoopable Litter works great at keeping litter box odors down and makes it very easy to pick up the litter box. I have found it very helpful to use the empty buckets to put the dirty litter box. The lid closes with a snap and keeps the smell out, and when you fill it up, you can just put it away with the trash! I also recommend the Arm and Hammer Litter Deodorant. Works miracles! It keeps the smell really low if you use it correctly.
Dishes for Food and Water – Any type will do, but I prefer the Bistro Brand mangers and waters. You can fill them up and leave them out for 24 hours of food access. Kittens need to eat as much as they want when they grow up to stay strong and healthy. And growing kittens eat a lot of food!
Kitten food – It is very important to find a high quality kitten food for your new kitten. Adult cat food is not good for kittens as it does not provide all the nutrients they need. You can discuss with your vet which brand of kitten food is right for your kitten. You should never suddenly change a kitten’s food. It can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. If you want to change food, do it slowly over a period of at least a week. Mix some of the new food with the old and slowly increase the amount until you reach 100% of the new food.
Brush and Comb –These are absolutely essential when you own a Persian or Himalayan! I found a great brush on PetSmart that has an ergonomic handle that makes brushing kittens much more comfortable. You also need a good comb specially designed for the undercoat to remove all loose hair. This will really help reduce shedding and help prevent tangles or matting.
TOYS! – Every kitten needs a good supply of toys. It’s so much fun to watch your new kitty run around, beat a jingle ball, or do stunts in the air trying to catch that little object dangling on the end of their human’s fishing rod! Any type of cat toy will do, just make sure you have a few on hand for your kitty’s entertainment.
Scratching post – It’s a cat’s natural instinct to scratch, so you need to make sure you provide them with an adequate surface to meet their needs. A sisal covered scratching post works great and will save your furniture from kitty claws! Just make sure you show them the right place to scratch when you first bring them to your home.
Shampoo – We all know that kittens are good at messing around. You should find a quality cat shampoo and keep some handy for the times when you need to bathe your kitty. As cats get older, they need to bathe less often, but it’s always good to have a kitten or cat shampoo on hand just in case!
Cat carrier – Cat carriers are required for trips to the vet and groomer or for any other outings you may need to take with your kitten. Make sure you choose one that provides plenty of room for your kitty to stand up and turn around if necessary.
Flea / parasite control – Revolution works absolutely beautifully. It covers fleas, heart worms, hookworms, roundworms and ear mites. It’s a one-pipe solution does it all! I highly recommend it in case of need.
Veterinarian – Last but not least, you will need to find a good vet. You will need someone to keep your kitten up to date on all vaccinations and fecal exams, and also someone to call when your kitten isn’t feeling so well. A veterinarian with 24-hour emergency assistance is a big plus. You never know when you will need it!
