It goes without saying that life goes by in the blink of an eye. This is especially true when you have children. One minute you’re nibbling on their little feet and the next you’re holding back the tears as you drop them on their first day of school.
Your baby’s first year if full moments cannot be missing which must be captured, saved, printed, archived, shared and appreciated!
I’ve been a photographer for 13 years and here are my personal tips for capturing the exciting first year!
Maternity: The journey begins!
I am going to suggest a maternity photo shoot here because this is where the journey begins. Hear the heartbeat for the first time, movements, kicks and see them for the first time during the first appointment with the ultrasound (ultrasound).
Some do not feel comfortable taking pictures during pregnancy, but they trust the photographer. They will make you feel great and you will look beautiful! You’ll be fine! After all, you are glowing!
Take photos when you feel most comfortable, most like their photos around 32 weeks or 7 months.
Newborn: So sleepy and tiny!
The best time to take pictures of babies would be before 2 weeks. At this stage they are so small and so sleepy! You can take pictures of babies at 4 weeks but they are more prone to wake up when you put them in the pose and they are a bit older too.
Before 2 weeks, as they are very sleepy, you can lay them in various ways without disturbing their sleep too much. They can be on the tummy, on the back, on the side and can be placed in anything like a basket, a toy chest and a small wagon!
At this stage they may be a little scratched (keep gloves to protect your face), maybe a little jaundiced and have some pimples. Do not worry! The photographer should correct these imperfections.
Baby photos are a must to remember this little stage that goes by very fast!
3 or 4 months: Belly time and head balance!
This is, perhaps, the place where you will see the most changes during the first year.
They have grown a lot from the photos of the newborn. They smile more often, maybe they have some hair, and they probably look like you by now. But they don’t do much other than stand on your back and a few seconds of belly. Head balance should also be a full force!
The photos at this point show great contrast in your baby’s physical changes. At this point you will be treating your baby a lot, since he cannot sit on his own yet. They will lie on their backs and maybe some pictures with them with their heads held high!
6 or 7 months: Sit down laughing and smiling!
This is my FAVORITE STAGE! At this point, they interact and smile a little more. They sit on their feet, grab things, bite things, and have a very sweet laugh!
I like to capture 6-7 month old photos while the baby is on a big bed or comfortable outdoor blanket. They sit well, but sometimes that head is too big and they wave around. So cute!
At this point, tummy time is no longer a torture for them, so they can last a little longer. Oh! And don’t forget to take some photos of them nibbling their toes while on their backs.
Enjoy the sweetness overload during this phase.
1 years: Stand up, move and mash the cake!
Here we are! That first year flew by! This is the phase of the movement where they have developed a way to get from point A to point B. Whether it’s crawling, running, rolling or walking.
Dress them in the best Sunday way, give them lots of kisses and hugs, maybe a little cake, and enjoy the memories of their first birthday!
Hope this helps when planning photos during your baby’s first year!
